This workshop will be held January 21-23. The workshop will begin with dinner on Friday evening, January 21 at 6:00 pm, and will conclude with lunch on Sunday, January 23 at 1:00 pm.
Writing Mindfully: Exploring our Transforming Stories
This workshop focuses on exploring big ideas through the power of small details and personal stories. Participants will explore how the art of paying attention to the small moments and everyday miracles can open our hearts and our art to the presence of the Sacred. We will also explore how our daily personal stories of hope, struggle, and transformation connect us to the spiritual journey and our shared human condition. Carrie will guide us through writing exercises, deep listening, and focused discussion to help us to identify the important stories of our lives and times, and to envision how we as individuals can participate in new stories of hope and possibility.
This workshop is open to women of all ages and all levels of writing experience. Carrie has designed this workshop to facilitate the development of our unique voices, as we discover the power of our own stories, in a very safe, nurturing and encouraging setting.

A Circle of Trust: Based on "Healing the Heart of Democracy" with Parker J. Palmer and Carrie Newcomer
On Saturday, January 21, from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM,
Parker Palmer and Carrie Newcomer will facilitate a gathering titled
Democracy from the Inside Out: A Circle of Trust Retreat, in Baker Commons at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. (A light breakfast will be served at 8:30 AM.)
In this day-long experience, people will examine their own citizen “habits of the heart,” guided by themes from Parker Palmer’s new book, Healing the Heart of Democracy, and by “Circle of Trust” ground rules that create a safe space for exploring challenging topics. Participants will spend time in large-group exploration of meaningful questions, in silent and solitary reflection and journaling, and in small-group dialogues rooted in personal storytelling. Toward the end of the retreat, participants will be invited to imagine how they might take the insights of the day back to the familiar settings of their own lives: families, neighborhoods, schools, religious communities, the workplace, and the larger reaches of public life. Registration is limited to 50 people, with first priority going to Luther students, and caps on enrollment of Luther faculty/staff and community members. Online registration will begin on Wednesday, January 4, 2012.
