Carrie Newcomer imparts weighty wisdoms and searches for universal truths left and right on The Geography of Light, grafting complex verse to the sweetest, un-fussiest of post-folk, country-informed, pop-shaded melodies as if that’s the easiest thing in the world to do. Putting forth her reflective observations in a commanding voice that only gets more sonorous with experience, Newcomer refuses to settle for lowest-common-denominator songcraft: She forces a listener to really listen; the intellect, virtue, curiosity and empathy of her words are worthy of study and savoring and the rewards are significant. There has always been a spiritual component to Newcomer’s music—she probes our place within the greater scheme and seeks the meaning of it all while remembering that she’s of this earth. But she still hasn’t found what she’s looking for, and that’s all the better for us, because this album’s richly hued storytelling bursts with the humanity, graciousness and wonderment only a seeker can find.
